California Nets Record-Breaking First Day POWERBALL® Sales!

Share:

Lottery Players Purchase More than $3.1 Million in 24 Hours; Ready for Tomorrow’s First Draw

SACRAMENTO – Yesterday morning marked a huge milestone for the California Lottery. For the first time in its history, when more than 21,000 retail locations across the state opened their doors, POWERBALL tickets went on sale to California Lottery players. While Lottery officials were excited to finally offer POWERBALL tickets to loyal players, there was really no telling how excited players would be … until today!

In just the first 24 hours of POWERBALL sales in California, Lottery players snapped up a national record-setting $3,101,816 in tickets – all in anticipation of tomorrow night’s $60 million POWERBALL draw. If the first draw for Californians isn’t enough to make you want to run out and buy a POWERBALL ticket, another reason to be excited is that the draw will actually take place in the Golden State tomorrow night at 7:59 p.m.

“Yesterday was a great first day for the POWERBALL game in California,” Lottery Director Robert T. O’Neill said. “We were able to kick the game off in style with launch events in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and you could feel how excited our players were to finally be able to play POWERBALL. We hope to continue to build that momentum as we lead up to tomorrow night’s live draw at Lottery Headquarters in Sacramento.”

Added Lottery Commission Chair Phil Tagami: “POWERBALL advances our work to help fund education in California. Record sales don’t just happen – selling more than $3 million in tickets requires work by a lot of people. I’d like to commend Lottery staff all across the state who worked hard to bring the POWERBALL draw to California. It’s amazing job they have done. And remember to play responsibly!”

As mentioned above, tomorrow night’s POWERBALL jackpot is an estimated $60 million. The estimated cash value of the jackpot is $38.9 million. The live draw will take place at Lottery Headquarters in Sacramento, CA, which is located at 700 North 10th Street. POWERBALL winning numbers are usually drawn in Tallahassee, Florida. More details to come in a separate media advisory.

POWERBALL is a multistate game, played in California and 44 other jurisdictions (42 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Players pick five numbers from 1 to 59 plus a POWERBALL number from 1 to 35. Draw times are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 7:59 p.m. PST. Tickets are $2 and can be purchased from any of the more than 21,000 California Lottery retailers. Please visit the California Lottery’s POWERBALL site for more information.

And remember, checking the daily draw results is easier than ever. All past and current Lottery draw results can be obtained for FREE by dialing 1-800-LOTTERY and selecting option 2, or via our website at www.calottery.com.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 96 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
