A Birthday to Remember for SoCal Lottery Player

SACRAMENTO – Heston Hughes will undoubtedly never forget his 35th birthday. Hughes purchased a $10 Mystery Crossword Scratchers the day after his birthday and won the top prize of $750,000! While claiming his prize at the California Lottery’s Santa Fe Springs District Office Hughes joked, “I wanted to stay fresh on my spelling, so I bought a crossword Scratcher.”

Hughes purchased his lucky ticket at the 7-Eleven located at 4323 East Live Oak Avenue in Arcadia (Los Angeles County). Hughes said that after revealing the first few words he didn’t even bother to finish scratching it, he wanted to see what his prize was so he took it to the machine and scanned it.

When asked if he had any big plans for his money or for any more birthday celebrations, Hughes answered, “I don’t really know. Maybe I’ll buy some Bitcoin and invest some of it. But first I’m going to have some sushi.”

Like all Lottery Scratchers, the $10 Mystery Crossword comes with a second chance to win another great prize of up to $25,000 during our weekly draw. Just subscribe to our 2nd Chance Program and submit any non-winning Scratchers ticket code for a chance to win.

This is all part of the Lottery’s continued effort to give out more prizes, create more winners and earn more money for California public education.

The California Lottery is a $6 billion enterprise based in Sacramento. It is one of the few state agencies that is a revenue generator, not accepting taxpayer dollars from the State’s General Fund. Its mission is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. In FY 2016-17, the Lottery created 83 new millionaires. Ninety-five cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
