Sergio Chavarria is now $100,000 richer, thanks to the new MONOPOLY $5 Scratchers game from the California Lottery.
Chavarria purchased his winning ticket at the Circle K located at 16056 Sherman Way in Van Nuys (Los Angeles County). He said he actually purchased his ticket last week, but didn’t get around to scratching it until the weekend. Chavarria described scratching his ticket carefully and slowly, revealing only part of the prize to see if he could see the “T” that would indicate that he’d won a free ticket. When he uncovered a dollar sign and then the number 1, he thought the 1 looked a little different. That’s because he’d won the $100,000 top prize! “I’m not the type to get jumpy,” Chavarria said. “I did have a little grin on my face though. I was very content.” He added that he later called his mother and she was “way more excited than I was.”
Chavarria signed his ticket and kept it safe for the next few days, telling hardly anyone. He even asked a friend for a ride to the Lottery’s Van Nuys District Office, but didn’t tell her where they were going. He said when she saw the Lottery sign outside the building she immediately turned to him and said “OK, what did you win?” Chavarria added that he plays Lottery games frequently, especially Hot Spot®, and has even won $10,000 on a different Scratchers game in the past.
Chavarria says he plans to use his winnings to put a down payment on a new house.
