The bills were piling up and Maria Luna was at home this past Friday trying to figure out how she was going to pay them all. “I just got a headache thinking about it! So, I decided to go down to the Laundromat (Olympic Market at 2801 E. Olympic Blvd. in Los Angeles) and get some Tylenols and a soda pop,” the 54-year-old mother of two remembered.
While she was there, she also figured why not pick up some of her “regular” Scratchers games, including her favorite – the $10 Bonus Crossword. Luna said she went home and a friend picked her up to go play Bingo. “I was still scratching it (the Bonus Crossword) on the way to Bingo, and all these (winning) words were popping up out of nowhere. I thought I scratched something wrong, but I told my friend, ‘Turn around, let’s go back to the Laundromat. I think I won $750!’”
Good thing they went back, but boy was Luna wrong! She was off on the amount by three zeroes. “He (the retailer) put it through the machine and said, ‘You won the big one!’ And I was like, ‘How much is the big one?’ When he told me it was $750,000, I said, ‘Oh yea, you’re lying!’” Luna recalled with a laugh. But it was no lie. This Los Angeles mom is now three quarters of a million dollars richer.
Aside from paying her bills, Luna says she has big plans for the money. “I’m going to purchase my home. I am. That’s my goal. I’ve always dreamed of my own home. And you know, I’m getting older, so that’s what I really want!”
This is the first big win playing the Lottery for Luna, who remembers winning decent prizes of $100 and $500 in the past. “But this is the first one I’ve ever won big. And I’m hoping for another one!” she said laughing. “If this came in, there will be another day. And I’ll be here (to collect it)!”
