Laura Nunez knew the Powerball jackpot was huge – so she decided to test her luck not once, but twice. Nunez had entered a lottery pool at work, but later on, while cashing in some Scratchers® tickets, she decided to buy another Powerball ticket. And it’s a good thing she did because she ended up matching five of six numbers to win $1,444,906.
“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh. I cried.” That’s how the 25-year-old described the moment she realized she was a winner. But Nunez had to keep her composure. She found out she’d won while at work – yes, the same place where she had entered the lottery pool. After a few moments, Nunez was able to calm down and keep working. She didn’t tell any of her coworkers that she’d won and she still hasn’t.
So who was the first person she told? Her mom. Family is very important to Nunez, who has a four-year-old daughter. In fact, it was a visit to her brother’s place in El Segundo that led to her stop at a nearby 7-Eleven to cash in those Scratchers and buy that lucky Powerball ticket. She ended up spending $6 on three Quick Pick® lines and now has $1.4 million to share with her family.
“I’m going to help my family. I’m not the only one who’s going to benefit,” she said. “I’m going to buy a house. It would be the perfect opportunity to own a home.” Nunez also said she plans to use some of the money to spoil her daughter.
