It’s not every day that there is a newly-minted millionaire in the town of Happy Camp. But that all changed when Georgia Merkler purchased a $20 $5 Million Jackpot Scratchers ticket on New Year’s Eve. Merkler uncovered the “$5 Million” symbol and admitted she has never had an experience like it. “I got the chills,” Merkler said.
The retired phone company worker told the California Lottery that she plans to invest all of her winnings. Merkler also said that she plays the California Lottery once in a while and had a good feeling about her luck on New Year’s Eve.
That lucky ticket was purchased at Parry’s Market, which is located at 143 Davis Road in Happy Camp (Siskiyou County). Parry’s Market is a big winner as well, as they will get $25,000 for selling the winning ticket. The owner of Parry’s Market, Bob Parry, told the California Lottery he plans to use that money to help remodel his family-owned grocery store.
As you can imagine, word of the big win spread fast in the small town of almost 1,200. “Scratchers sales are up. They have almost tripled,” Parry said. And when it comes to one of his regular customers winning $5 million, Parry couldn’t be happier. “If anyone deserves it, it would be her,” he said.
