  • “You Say ‘Lucky,’ I Say ‘We’re Blessed’”

  • When someone wins the lottery, a response many have is simply, “Lucky.” That’s likely going to be the story with our latest winner, Brandon Parker. The 23-year-old just won $750,000 on the new $30 California Lottery 30th Anniversary Scratchers ticket, but his family says luck had nothing to do with it.

“You say ‘lucky,’ I say ‘we’re blessed,’” said Deborah Parker, Brandon’s mother.

To understand what she means, let’s go back in time to just over 23 years ago. Deborah, then seven months pregnant with Brandon, won a $20,000 car in a radio promotion. After the win she said someone told her, “Oh, he’s your lucky charm.” At the time it seemed like a simple statement, but fast-forward to last week. Brandon scratched the $30 ticket and uncovered a “26” – a number that matched one of the winning numbers on the ticket and just happened to be the number of Deborah’s birthday. Under that 26 was the $750,000 prize. “The idea that he won this with my birthday number, I think… it all comes together in life.”

But that’s not all. Brandon wasn’t even planning on buying a lottery ticket that day. He stopped by the P and M Mini Market, located at 624 Morning Drive, Suite J in Bakersfield (Kern County), to buy something to drink and noticed the new $30 ticket was on sale. Brandon saw another customer purchase four tickets and scratch them on the spot. None of the tickets were big winners. “So, I thought with the fifth one, at least I’ll get my money back and win a ticket,” Brandon explained. Try getting your money back and then some!

So what does Brandon think he’ll do now with all that cash? He’s been planning to buy a truck, but he says that’s about it. “I can’t quit my job, but it’s enough to be comfortable.” Brandon says he’ll likely save the rest adding, “This is a good head start.”
