New Dad-to-be in Torrance Claims $3 Million Powerball® Prize

SACRAMENTO – Daniel Miguel Galeon is having quite the year, and it’s only January! First, he found out he and his wife are expecting their first child. And now, the 26-year-old has won $3,167,202 playing Powerball.

Galeon matched five of the six numbers in Saturday’s draw, on one of the two Quick Pick® tickets he bought at a 7-Eleven in Torrance. That’s also where he went to check his ticket a few days after the drawing. Galeon says he scanned the ticket and couldn’t believe what he was seeing – the message on the machine read “winner” and “$3,167,202.” Galeon thought it was a mistake and scanned a different ticket before trying the winning ticket again. The same message popped up and this time Galeon told cashier, “I think your machine is broken.”

The machine was not broken and the store owner confirmed Galeon’s ticket matched the winning numbers 13, 14, 19, 31 and 38 – missing only the Powerball number of 25. So how did Galeon react to the news? “I was quiet about it,” he explained. “I was still in shock.” But it finally hit him as he drove home. He started yelling and didn’t stop. Even after he arrived home, he kept yelling and then quickly put the ticket in a safe.

Now, after all that excitement you’d think Galeon would’ve called his wife right away to tell her the good news – well, he did and he didn’t. “I gave her some hints on the phone but she didn’t believe me,” he said. That’s when he came up with a plan to surprise her. He waited until the next day and during dinner with their family, Galeon told them the big news.

So what’s next for the new father-to-be? He plans to pay off some bills, buy a car, look for a house and then spoil his family a bit. Galeon wants to send his parents on a nice vacation, buy new household appliances for his sister and a car for his brother. He also plans to set up a college fund for his nieces and make a donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Galeon isn’t the only big winner here. The 7-Eleven that sold him the winning ticket will receive a retailer bonus of $15,836.01. That store is located at 1699 W. Carson Street in Torrance (Los Angeles County).
