Woman Races to Claim Daily Derby® Ticket Worth More Than $350,000

SACRAMENTO – Gemma Palmer can’t wait any longer. She knew she had purchased a very lucky Daily Derby ticket in Culver City (Los Angeles County) and was thrilled to turn it in. Do you blame her? Her ticket matched all three winning horses and the final race time in the game on Tuesday, and Gemma won a $359,960 prize!

Gemma said what makes this even more exciting is the simple fact that she only plays the game because she loves horses. “The way they look. I think they’re the most beautiful animal,” Gemma said. The way she plays the game is rather simple too. “I don’t ever pick the horses. I don’t pick the times. Just a quick pick,” she explained.

The winning ticket was sold at Albert Liquors, which is located at 5565 Sepulveda Boulevard in Culver City. The winning horses were: 1st place – 10 – Solid Gold; 2nd place – 5 – California Classic; and 3rd place – 7 – Eureka. The winning race time was a blistering 1:45.85.

You’d think that Gemma’s winning moment might have been as exhilarating as a Kentucky Derby photo finish. Not quite. “I just couldn’t believe it. I sat there, just like I couldn’t move,” said Gemma, who says it was only last night that she was finally able to rest her mind. Now she’s got to think about how she’s going to spend that money. Will she spend it on a horse perhaps? Nah. Gemma is nice and practical, looking at paying off some bills and getting her financial house in winning order.

Daily Derby combines the fun and excitement of horse racing with several ways to win, including the chance to win twice on a single ticket. This unique game was the first horse racing-themed game in the U.S. played on regular Lottery terminals. The game can be played at any of the Lottery’s 21,000 retailers by selecting three horses from a field of 12; one to finish 1st, one to finish 2nd, one to finish 3rd; and a race time.

Lottery players can pick their horses before 6:30 p.m. for the current day’s draw. The Daily Derby draw is held at after 6:30 p.m., at which time you can get winning information from your retailer’s terminal, or you can visit the Lottery’s website at for the results.

The California Lottery wants to remind winners to sign the back of their tickets, keep tickets in a safe place and contact Lottery officials or visit their local Lottery District Office as soon as possible. Winners have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim prizes.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 94 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
