Hungry Teen’s Big Appetite ‘Drives’ San Diego Winner to $1 Million Scratchers® Payoff

Craig Mizewicz 440

Disabled Man Talks Young Friend into Taking Him to Claim Ticket With the Promise of Tasty Meal!

SACRAMENTO – You know kids – you feed them and they’ll do anything, right? At least that was Craig Misewicz’s thinking as he tried to come up with a way to get 12.6 miles (yes, he did the math) from his home in San Diego to the Lottery’s District Office on Ruffin Road. After all, there was no time to waste. He had a $1 million winning California Gold Scratchers ticket that he needed to redeem. But there was one problem. Since he’s disabled, he doesn’t drive, so he had no way of getting there himself.

Misewicz decided to hatch a plan with a teenage friend – and did what most smart people would do involving a growing young male. He targeted the teen’s stomach! “I told him if he gave me a ride (to cash in my million), I would buy him a nice dinner. I didn’t have to twist his arm much,” Misewicz remembered with a laugh. So what did the young man eat? “Mexicali burgers, shorts ribs and carrot cake. He’ll probably con me out of something else too, but that’s alright!”

Buying dinner in exchange for a ride to claim a $1 million prize? Talk about a no-brainer! Misewicz says this big win capped off a couple week stretch of feeling lucky. “I don’t know how to explain it to you. I’ve just been feeling it. I only buy when I feel it. If I don’t feel it, I don’t buy.”

The 52-year-old has actually been on quite a roll. During a 48 hour stretch last month, he says he won $583 playing Daily Derby®, and another $200 in Scratchers from two different retail locations – all on the same day! He was feeling so lucky, the following day (January 21), he bought another Scratchers ticket and won twice as much ($500)!

“The day I won the $583, I was with a friend at CVS. I thought the Scratchers (vending) machine was calling my name. So I put $20 in there for a $5 Million Jackpot ticket and it was a $100 winner! Then he took me from there to Ralph’s. I was standing by the (vending) machine waiting for him (to finish shopping) and bought another $20 ticket. And it was a $100 winner! And then the very next day, less than 10 hours later, I bought a Scratchers ticket and it was a $500 winner! So I was feeling it,” Misewicz laughed. “Hopefully the three tickets in my pocket win tonight!”

Misewicz purchased his latest winning Scratchers (the California Gold ticket worth $1 million) at Del Mar Wine Company, which is located at 2654 Del Mar Heights Road in Del Mar (San Diego County). And how’s this – he says he’s probably going to give 95 percent of it away to unsuspecting people! “I’m a pay it forward kind of guy. I’m probably going to do it (give the money away) randomly, where people don’t know who I am, where I’m from and don’t understand why I did it!”

The winning certainly doesn’t stop there – like all Lottery Scratchers games, the California Gold game comes with a second chance to win the top prize. Just subscribe to our 2nd Chance Program and submit any non-winning California Gold Scratchers ticket codes for another chance to win. The game is part of the Lottery’s continued effort to give out more prizes, create more winners and earn more money for California public schools.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 95 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
