Down the Stretch They Came! ‘Money Bags’ Crosses Finish Line for Rare $579,000 Daily Derby® Win in L.A.!

SACRAMENTO – With all eyes on California Chrome (as this electrifying Thoroughbred from California attempts to win the Triple Crown next weekend at the Belmont Stakes) – hey, we thought it only makes sense for the California Lottery to get the Golden State in a winning mood with a horse race of a different kind!

One lucky player – who has what turned out to be the winning ticket that they purchased in Los Angeles – matched not just one, but all three winning horses (and the final race time) last night to leave our virtual lottery track with the top prize of a whopping $579,738!

For the record, the winning horses were: 1st place – #11 – “MONEY BAGS”; 2nd place – #09 – “WINNING SPIRIT”; and 3rd place – #12 – “LUCKY CHARMS”. Lucky indeed! The winning race time was a speedy 1:46.06.

While we still don’t know who owns this half million-plus dollar ticket, we do know it was purchased near Dodger Stadium at House of Spirits (which is located at 1314 Echo Park Avenue).

To give you an idea of kinda what a big deal this is – the last time someone hit the Daily Derby grand prize was way back on February 7. That’s when the owner of a winning ticket purchased in Carson (Los Angeles County) eventually cashed it in for a sweet payday of $320,315.

Let’s see. The past two Daily Derby races have been won by players in Los Angeles County. Possibly the first Triple Crown winner since 1979 (California Chrome) is based at nearby Los Alamitos Race Course. We’re just sayin’…

Daily Derby combines the fun and excitement of horse racing with several ways to win, including the chance to win twice on a single ticket. This unique game was the first horse racing-themed game in the U.S. played on regular Lottery terminals. The game can be played at any of the Lottery’s 21,000 retailers by selecting three horses from a field of 12; one to finish 1st, one to finish 2nd, one to finish 3rd; and a race time.

Lottery players can pick their horses before 6:30 p.m. for the current day’s draw. The Daily Derby draw is held after 6:30 p.m., at which time you can get winning information from your retailer’s terminal, or you can visit the Lottery’s website at for the results.

The California Lottery wants to remind the winner of last night’s race to sign the back of their ticket immediately, keep it in a safe place and contact Lottery officials or visit their local Lottery District Office as soon as possible. Winners have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim prizes.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 95 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
