LA County Man Races to Claim Daily Derby® Grand Prize

Rueben Santaella jackpot winner

SACRAMENTO – “My heart was racing,” said Ruben Santaella, describing what happened when he hit the grand prize in Wednesday’s Daily Derby game. Can you blame him? After all, Santaella was clutching a winning ticket worth $150,852!

The Los Angeles County man said things were a bit rushed when he bought the ticket, so instead of picking his own horses as he often does, he went with a Quick Pick®. That turned out to be an amazingly good move. His ticket matched all three winning horses and the final race time.

Santaella bought his winning ticket at the Chevron located at 601 Vista Del Mar in El Segundo (Los Angeles County). The winning horses were: 1st place – 10 – Solid Gold; 2nd place – 6 – Whirl Win; and 3rd place – 5 – California Classic. The winning race time was a blistering 1:45.09.

Santaella said he and his wife will waste no time in paying off some of their bills and then put a little aside in savings. While he wishes he could have won a little more to share with his family, he’s not complaining. “We’ll take it,” said Santaella, “It will put us one step ahead.”

Daily Derby combines the fun and excitement of horse racing with several ways to win, including the chance to win twice on a single ticket. This unique game was the first horse racing-themed game in the U.S. played on regular Lottery terminals. The game can be played at any of the Lottery’s 21,000 retailers by selecting three horses from a field of 12; one to finish 1st, one to finish 2nd, one to finish 3rd; and a race time.

Lottery players can pick their horses before 6:30 p.m. for the current day’s draw. The Daily Derby draw is held at after 6:30 p.m., at which time you can get winning information from your retailer’s terminal, or you can visit the Lottery’s website at for the results.

The California Lottery wants to remind winners to sign the back of their tickets, keep tickets in a safe place and contact Lottery officials or visit their local Lottery District Office as soon as possible. Winners have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim prizes.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 94 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. Since 2000, Lottery players have contributed $1 billion to public schools each year, and, since we began in 1985, Lottery players have contributed a total of more than $24 billion to education. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
