General Contractor Claims One-third of $88 Million in Van Nuys

SACRAMENTO, September 10, 2001 -- Lottery officials announced one of the three winning tickets for last week's $88 million jackpot was claimed in Van Nuys this morning by Moshe Bar, a general contractor. Moshe who plays the lottery weekly won a third of the jackpot but also won 4 plus the MEGA number on a separate ticket winning an additional $1,754. Moshe plans to use his winning portion of the $88 million jackpot or $29.3 million to fund his grandchildren's education and share with his other family members. The general contractor opted for the cash option at a value of $14.9 million before federal tax withholding of 27.5%.

Last Thursday, a group of nine co-workers represented by Fabiola Galvin and Jack Lee came forward to the Santa Fe District Office to claim one-third of last week's MEGA jackpot. The group who won $29.3 also designated the cash value of $14.9 million. After a 27.5% federal tax withholding each winner will receive $1.1 million. On Friday six siblings calling themselves the "Asian Brady Bunch" (Tim, Sam, Tom, Molly, Lauren, and Tiffany Kamtan) claimed their $29.3 ticket worth $14.9 million before federal withholding of $27.5 million.

More than $50 million will go to public education from sales attributed to this jackpot. The estimated cash value of the $88 million would equal roughly half of the jackpot or $44 million or the amount the lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. The three retailers who sold the winning tickets will receive 1/2 of 1% of the jackpot as a bonus for selling the winning ticket. A single winning ticket would yield $146,500 for the retailer. Retailers were J market, 8252 W 3rd Street in Los Angeles; Impulse Card & Gifts, 1055 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles; and Lee's Chevron Service, 390 n Lemon Avenue, Walnut.

On June 23, 2001 the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $141 million and was won by a single winning ticket. Alcario Castellano of San Jose, California became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $141 million on June 23, 2001. On April 17, 1991, the second largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $118.8 million and was won by 10 winning tickets and 54 winners. On April 8, 1998, the third largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $104 million and was won by 3 winning tickets and 24 winners.
