‘Dog Tired’ Owner of $1.6 Million Mega Millions® Ticket Purchased in Felton Claims Prize!
SACRAMENTO – They make the trip down Highway 9 “from time to time” to go shopping in Santa Cruz. On Tuesday (June 24), Glenn Getzfreid says he decided to stop and make one purchase along the way.
At $25 million, the Mega Millions jackpot sounded like a fantastic life-changing amount. So Getzfreid and his wife pulled the car over in tiny Felton so he could grab five Quick Picks® for that night’s draw. “It was just a beautiful day over there (in Felton). I planned on stopping.”
Good thing he did. The very first line of Getzfreid’s ticket matched five of the six numbers for a win worth exactly $1,669,791! Sure, he missed the Mega number 10, which would have scored him the huge jackpot. But consider this! – Instead of the $1.6 million-plus that he won, Getzfreid confesses he thought he was “only” getting $1,600! “My wife was still happy thinking it was 16-hundred.”
After the draw, with both still not positive what the correct amount was, Getzfreid decided he had to find out for himself! “I’d gotten home from work and I was dog tired. I took it down (to a retailer) where they scanned the ticket. That’s when I found out it was actually one million, six hundred thousand – not 16-hundred. Yes, it’s probably going to take a while for it all to sink in.”
For the record, Getzfreid’s ticket matched the winning numbers 13-17-24-47 and 65 – again only missing the Mega number of 10. He stopped and bought it at Quick Stop, located at 5960 Highway 9 in Felton (Santa Cruz County). What’s extra fun about this win is the retailer gets to cash in as well, collecting a one half of one percent bonus worth $8,348.96!
As for Getzfreid and his huge prize, he says he plans on using some of it to buy a “new vehicle with all the bells and whistles,” and then retiring this year. “I’ve been playing (the California Lottery) religiously since almost the beginning. A lot of investment before something finally happened!” Who says persistence doesn’t pay off? Sometimes literally in fact!
