Assemblymember Nicole Parra Presents “Exceptional Educator” Award to Hanford Teacher

SACRAMENTO -- The Big Spin Show, airing this Saturday, October 11, 2003, will feature Assemblymember Nicole Parra (D) from Hanford who will present the Lottery’s Exceptional Educator Award to John Raven from Hanford.

John Raven

In three years of teaching, Mr. Raven has had a positive influence on his students at Pioneer Elementary School in Hanford. He has been able to accomplish this through his winning philosophy and creative methods that include constructing lesson plans that hold students’ attention, thus creating the desire for students to learn and excel in a “student-centered learning environment”. Additionally, Mr. Raven frequently uses hands-on activities to teach and reinforce new ideas, often incorporating technology to help students with writing, research and presentations. These techniques have been so successful that a new school wide technology curriculum and a state of the art computer lab have been created, with Mr. Raven at the helm. Further, Mr. Raven gets to know each student individually, and together they build on the students’ strengths and develop skills in areas of weakness. “In a short period of time, John has made a tremendous impact on students at Pioneer Elementary School with his innovative teaching techniques,” explained Assemblymember Parra.

The California Lottery’s distinguished “Exceptional Educator” award has been presented on “The Big Spin®” television show since April of 2001. The Lottery enlists various Legislators to present these awards which recognize the outstanding teachers whose extraordinary efforts help California students to succeed. This week’s show aired Saturday, October 11, 2003, in 12 television markets statewide.
