California Gold Contestant From El Monte Wins $100,000


SACRAMENTO -- The new California Lottery's "Big Spin® 2000" show airs Saturday October 2, 1999 in twelve television markets statewide. Contestants on this week's show won a total of $287,500.

Eva Velasquez from El Monte isn't sure what she's going to do with the $100,000 she won as the week's top California Gold winner. "I'm usually not very lucky," said Velasquez after she won. "I want to put the money away and have a family discussion, I don't want to waste any of it." Other California Gold contestants won a total of $22,500.

Three contestants went star gazing for their Fame & Fortune and won a combined total of $90,000. Fame & Fortune top winner Coby Clinkenbeard, from Turlock, won $75,000 and plans to fix up her car, invest, and use some of her prize money for school. Other Fame & Fortune winners were Regina Knight from Sacramento who won $10,000 and Neri Hernandez from Delano winning $5,000.

"I want to fix up my home and help out my kids," said Armond Burroughs, a retired engineer from Lakewood. Burroughs played California Lottery's Fantasy 5® Dream Machine and won $45,000.

Son Nguyen and his mother Giun Nguyen were in line at the grocery store when Son asked his mother for $1.00 to purchase a Lottery ticket. That $1.00 turned into $30,000 when their ticket was a winning "Spin" Scratchers. The Nguyen's plan to split their prize. Son wants to buy a new car and Giun would like to go on a vacation visiting family.

The California Lottery sells its products through a network of more than 18,000 outlets statewide. The Lottery provides 52 percent of its revenues to players as prizes, 34 percent to public schools, and 14 percent for administrative expenses, which includes 6.8 percent for retailer commissions. Since 1985, the Lottery has raised more than $11 billion for public schools and has provided an annual average of approximately 38 percent of the Lottery's total revenues to schools. The California Lottery's contribution equals approximately 2 percent of the state's total education budget. "Big Spin® 2000" is the longest running Lottery game show in the country, airing continuously since 1985.
