San Pedro Business Receives Lottery's Top Honor "Mr. C's Liquor" Named Lottery's Retailer of the Year

Share:

Sacramento--The California Lottery announced today that San Pedro's Mr. C's Liquor, owned by Bill and Mary Chan, has been named California Lottery's Retailer of the Year. A special presentation will be held at Mr. C's Liquor, 1925 S. Pacific Avenue, San Pedro at 11:00 a.m. on September 15, 1999.

"Dedication to their customers, involvement with the community, and focusing on promoting the Lottery with a positive attitude makes for a successful sales formula," said Director of Sales, Al Frazier. "The Chans are also lucky retailers having sold two SuperLotto jackpot tickets in 1989 and 1997."

Owners Bill and Mary Chan have been residents of San Pedro for 45 years and have owned Mr. C's Liquor for 25 years. Total sales to date are over $6,326,358 million since they began selling in 1988. This past fiscal year's on-line sales exceed $737,360 and Scratchers® sales exceeded $311,150. With a minimum 34 percent of all Lottery ticket sales benefiting public education, Mr. C's liquor has contributed more than $2,150,961 to California's public schools. Mr. C's players have won over $22 million with one player, Armando Mendoza III, winning $13 million in 1997, and two others, Spencer Simpson and Peggy Moore, splitting nearly a $6 million ticket.

The California Lottery sells its products through a network of more than 18,000 outlets statewide. The Lottery provides 52.5 percent of its revenues to players as prizes, 34 percent to public schools and 13.5 percent for administrative expenses, which includes 6.9 percent for retailer commissions. Since 1985 the Lottery has raised more than $11 billion for public schools and has provided an annual average of approximately 38 percent of total revenues to schools. The California Lottery's contribution equals approximately 2 percent of the state's total education budget.
