A Hard to Believe $1 Million Scratcher Win

SACRAMENTO – It would have been business as usual when Hoa Nguyen’s husband brought home her two daily Scratchers® from his morning coffee run, but this one unbelievably hit it big!  Hoa tells us she didn’t feel too excited when she began to scratch away the six zeros that revealed a $1 million top prize in the $250 Million Cash Spectacular Scratchers game!

Hoa’s disbelief continued as she held onto her big win the entire day. She tells us she finally, calmly, drove to the Lottery’s East Bay District Office to validate her win. “I didn’t believe it was real until someone here told me,” she explained to Lottery staff.

The ticket was purchased at Thanh Thuy Deli, which is located at 745 East 12th Street, Suite 102 in Oakland (Alameda County). Thanh Thuy Deli will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

With her winnings, Hoa, who is a wife and mother of two, is taking her family on vacation to Vietnam to visit her mother. It will be the first time the mother and daughter have seen each other in five years.

The $250 Million Cash Spectacular Scratchers ticket is part of the Lottery’s continued effort to give out more prizes, create more winners and earn more money for education. The oversized ticket features a unique holographic design and, in total, offers more than a quarter of a billion dollars in prizes. To play, simply match any of “Your Numbers” to any of the six “Winning Numbers” and win that prize. Uncover a “star” symbol and win $100 instantly. Uncover a “WIN” symbol and win all 20 prizes automatically! Overall game odds of winning a prize are 1 in 3.50. Odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1.2 million.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 94 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. Since 2000, Lottery players have contributed $1 billion to public schools each year, and, since we began in 1985, Lottery players have contributed a total of more than $25 billion to education. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
