Daily Derby® Winner From L.A. Pulling For California Chrome to Make the Golden State Proud

Share:

Eric Moore 440

SACRAMENTO – Eric Moore admits he’s not a huge horse racing fan, but he loves playing his luck at the California Lottery’s virtual Daily Derby track. “I’m a regular player. I love the game. I’m hooked on it and have been playing it for years!” confessed the Los Angeles City Public Works employee.

All of his determination paid off handsomely last Saturday night when the 63-year-old Los Angeles resident successfully picked what turned out to be all three winning horses (and the final race time) to win the top prize of a whopping $579,738.

“I almost didn’t play! I almost took a break, but the other part of me said, ‘Don’t give up!’ I’m glad I didn’t listen to that one part of me that said to take a break because I would have been one miserable person,” Moore chuckled. “It’s just disbelief. It hasn’t sunk in. I’m not sure it ever will!”

For the record, the winning horses were: 1st place – #11 – “MONEY BAGS”; 2nd place – #09 – “WINNING SPIRIT”; and 3rd place – #12 – “LUCKY CHARMS”. Lucky indeed! The winning race time was a speedy 1:46.06. Moore purchased his winning ticket near Dodger Stadium at House of Spirits (which is located at 1314 Echo Park Avenue).

To give you an idea of kind of what a big deal this is – the last time someone hit the Daily Derby grand prize was way back on February 7. That’s when the owner of a winning ticket purchased in Carson (Los Angeles County) eventually cashed it in for a sweet payday of $320,315.

“I’m not really a horse racing fan, but I love this game (Daily Derby) because of the horses and the race time,” Moore explained. And I’ll be pulling for California Chrome (at the Belmont Stakes tomorrow). I always watch the Triple Crown. I’ll be in front of my TV.” No doubt counting his money!

Who knew L.A. was such a horse racing mecca all of a sudden? The past two Daily Derby races have been won by players in Los Angeles County. And possibly the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 (California Chrome) is based at nearby Los Alamitos Race Course!

“There you go!” Moore remarked, “And I’m going to keep on playing!” As for what he’s going to do with his more than a half a million dollars in winnings, “Pay off some bills and I suppose share some of the money with some very dear friends of mine.”

Daily Derby combines the fun and excitement of horse racing with several ways to win, including the chance to win twice on a single ticket. This unique game was the first horse racing-themed game in the U.S. played on regular Lottery terminals. The game can be played at any of the Lottery’s 21,000 retailers by selecting three horses from a field of 12; one to finish 1st, one to finish 2nd, one to finish 3rd; and a race time.

Lottery players can pick their horses before 6:30 p.m. for the current day’s draw. The Daily Derby draw is held after 6:30 p.m., at which time you can get winning information from your retailer’s terminal, or you can visit the Lottery’s website at http://www.calottery.com/win/winning-numbers for the results.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 95 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
