MEDIA ADVISORY - Spelling Bee in Walnut Creek

For 25 years, the California Lottery has been supporting California educational efforts by providing supplemental income to schools. Last month, the Lottery announced its sponsorship of 13 spelling bees across the state.

The final spelling bee takes place in Walnut Creek and is sponsored by The Contra Costa Times. The winners of the 13 regional spelling bees will then move on to compete at the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., which is held in early June. The Lottery’s sponsorship of the events includes airfare for the student and a parent to the National Spelling Bee, as well as hotel accommodations, meals and some tours of the city.

The purpose of the National Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
