Lottery Launches New Online Promotion

Receives Huge Player Response Statewide

SACRAMENTO – The California Lottery launched a new online promotion that received unprecedented player activity in its opening week. The online promotion offers players the chance to turn non-winning Scratchers® tickets into a pack of 80 Scratchers tickets, including additional chances to win up to a quarter-million-dollars in top prizes.

More than 1.5 million ticket codes from non-winning $5 Scratchers games were submitted from players across the state to the Lottery’s online program called 2nd Chance, which is driving the promotion. The program does exactly what its name says by giving players a second chance to win “the big one.”

“We’re taking advantage of the dog days of summer to rev up our player base. The 315 extra prizes we’re giving away in this promotion has existing and new players logging on by the thousands, supporting the old adage that everybody deserves a second chance,” says Russ Lopez, the Lottery’s Deputy Director of Corporate Communications.

In the promotion’s first week, player interest drove a 192% increase in weekly $5 ticket code entries and a 16% increase in new 2nd Chance account registrations. Players are entering drawings each week through September 15 for the chance to be one of 35 weekly winners selected.

The first group of 35 winners come from all over the state, as seen in the winner’s listing from the draw held earlier this week. Players have until Saturday nights at 11:59 PDT to enter eligible non-winning $5 Scratchers ticket codes for each week’s drawing. Lucky winners must log in to their secure 2nd Chance accounts to claim their prize.

Additional online Lottery promotions are in the works. This Monday the California Lottery will launch another promotion that encourages people 18 and older to submit pictures of their pets “dressed for adventure” for another chance to win a pack of 80 Scratchers tickets. The contest also encourages players to support their local shelters.

“We encourage our players to send us photos of their pets ready for adventure. The pet promotion is in line with our new advertising campaign for the Strike it Rich! Scratchers game, which features a former “pound pup” turned star. It’s also a good way to potentially win $250,000,” says Lopez.

For more information on Lottery promotions visit The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 94 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. Since 2000, Lottery players have contributed $1 billion to public schools each year, and, since we began in 1985, Lottery players have contributed a total of more than $25 billion to education. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
