Chef Goes for “Gold” and Wins $1 Million in Sunnyvale

SACRAMENTO – Elder Galicia Lopez knew it right away. Just seconds after he started scratching his California Gold Scratchers®, he saw it – the $1 million prize.

Winning a large amount of money like that might cause some to shout or jump up and down, but not this 32-year-old chef. While he admitted to immediately throwing his arms into the air, he says he played it pretty cool after that and just smiled. Lopez then headed home to share the big news with his family.

So what’s next for the big winner? Lopez plans to spend some money on a home, a car and a vacation. When asked which purchase he’ll make first, he laughed and said the first thing he’ll do is “go to the bank.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Blue Bonnet, which is located at 208 S. Fair Oaks in Sunnyvale (Santa Clara County). The lucky retail location also comes out a big winner. They will receive a bonus of a half a percent, or $5,000, just for selling the top prize-winning ticket.

California Gold is one of the Lottery’s $10 Scratchers games, with a top prize of $1 million. Just match any of your numbers to any of the six winning numbers and win that prize. Uncover a "10X" symbol to automatically win 10 times that prize. Uncover a "20X" symbol to automatically win 20 times that prize. Uncover a "WIN" symbol to automatically win all 20 prizes. Uncover a "100" in the "FAST SPOT," and win $100 instantly!

The winning doesn’t stop there – like all Lottery Scratchers games, California Gold comes with a second chance to win the top prize. Just subscribe to our 2nd Chance Program and submit any non-winning California Gold Scratchers ticket codes for a chance to win.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 95 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation.
