Lightening Strikes Fourth Winner at BlueBirds Daily Derby Record Prize Won at Lucky Lotto Retailer
SACRAMENTO, October 7, 2002 -- Lottery officials announced that Emery Worlwide employee, Bill Copeland won more than $1 Million playing the Lottery's Daily Derby game. Copeland who was on his way to work stopped to pick-up tickets at lucky retailer Bluebird Liquors for the SuperLotto Plus jackpot. "I noticed the Daily Derby prize had gone over a million and so I bought a couple bucks worth." Copeland has been playing Daily Derby for about 3 months. Copeland said," You can't win if you don't play. I like going to the lucky retailers but I never imagined I'd win like this." When asked what his plans are for the prize of $1,007,712 paid out in a lump sum, he said he wants to paint the house, buy a motor home and give his kids money for college. "This is was a great return for my total investment of about $75."
Bluebird Liquors is a top seller ranking second in the state amongst more than 18,000 retailers and is one of the luckiest retailers having sold four prizes of over $1 million. This retailer previously sold three jackpot tickets: in 1988 for $1.2 million, in 1991 for $13 million and in 1996 for $16 million. Now Bluebird Liquors has sold the largest Daily Derby prize in the game's history for over $1 million. The retailer ranks as the third luckiest lottery retailer in California and ranks second in California Lottery sales with over $5.1 million during the 2001-2002 fiscal year. The Lottery has more than 18,000 retailers in its network.
Daily Derby is played at all retailers including SuperLotto Plus can be played at more than 18,000 retail business establishments around the state. The SuperLotto Plus draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
