San Jose Man Wins $1 Million on Christmas Eve, Karma Plays a Big Part

SACRAMENTO – Mark Brown is a smart man and a thoughtful man. He won the top prize on the $250 Million Cash Spectacular Scratchers® ticket on Christmas Eve, but just recently came in to the Lottery’s East Bay District Office to claim his prize. What was he waiting for, you might ask? Well, he was talking to his accountant about the best way to make his money last and grow for him – like we said, smart!

Brown is no stranger to high finance. He is a former car salesman for Ferrari, and he once sold a car to a past Lottery winner. He took a sabbatical from that job to provide care for a friend who was ill, an incredibly thoughtful gesture. It’s no wonder karma brought him this prize!

Brown bought his winning ticket on Christmas Eve at Alex’s 49er Inn, which is located at 2214 Business Center in San Jose (Santa Clara County). Brown goes to that retailer pretty often and is excited that they will get a bonus for selling him the winning ticket – $5,000 to be exact! Once he scratched it, he wasn’t sure he had won, so he ran his ticket through the check-a-ticket and then calmly put it in his pocket and went home. He promptly went to the bank and put it in a safe deposit box. Brown says he plans to spoil his two daughters with his prize.

The $250 Million Cash Spectacular Scratchers ticket is part of the Lottery’s continued effort to give out more prizes, create more winners and earn more money for education. The oversized ticket features a unique holographic design and, in total, offers more than a quarter of a billion dollars in prizes. To play, simply match any of “Your Numbers” to any of the six “Winning Numbers” and win that prize. Uncover a “star” symbol and win $100 instantly. Uncover a “WIN” symbol and win all 20 prizes automatically! Overall game odds of winning a prize are 1 in 3.50. Odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1.2 million.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 96 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
