Media Alert: Powerball® Tickets Go On Sale Statewide Monday Morning!


SACRAMENTO – Get your lucky numbers ready lotto players! The California Lottery’s newest offering, Powerball, goes on sale bright and early Monday morning.

The excitement of the Powerball launch provides plenty of opportunities for you and your media organization to head out on Monday, April 8th to find content at many of the local California Lottery retailers near you.

Here is the info you need to turn a fun and exciting story Monday featuring Powerball:

1. What is Powerball?
 • Powerball is a multi-state, mega-jackpot lottery game. The California Lottery will begin selling tickets for Powerball on April 8, 2013. Each play will cost $2. The first Powerball draw which includes California sales will be Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Draws will close every Wednesday and Saturday at 7:00 pm PT and winning numbers will be drawn at 7:59 pm PT.

2. Will Powerball be taking the place of SuperLOTTO® Plus or MEGA Millions®?
 • No. SuperLOTTO Plus and MEGA Millions will still be available. SuperLOTTO Plus will continue to have draws every Wednesday and Saturday. MEGA Millions will continue to have draws every Tuesday and Friday.

3. What will the jackpot be for Powerball?
 • Powerball jackpots start at $40 million. If there are no Grand Prize winners, the jackpot will increase at a minimum of $10 million per roll.
 • If there is more than one Grand Prize winner, the jackpot will be divided equally among them.

4. How is the Powerball jackpot prize paid out?
 • The Powerball prize is paid in 30 annual installments unless the winner determines to choose the Powerball Cash Option.
 • The Cash Option for a Powerball jackpot must be made by the jackpot winner within 60 days after the Lottery authorizes payment.
 • For multiple ownership claims, the claimants must unanimously elect the same payment option.

5. How long do players have to claim prizes?
 • As with all the other California draw games (with the exception of a MEGA Millions jackpot prize) players will have 180 days from the date of the Powerball draw to claim prizes.  The jackpot can be claimed for up to one year from the date of the Powerball draw.

6. Will Group Play and Multiple Ownership Claims be available for Powerball?
 • Yes.  The maximum number of claimants on a multiple ownership claim will be 100, the same as for SuperLotto Plus and MEGA Millions.

7. How will players find out if they have won?
 • Retail Locations: Winning Powerball numbers will be found at all California Lottery Retail locations and on this website (just like SLP, MM and the other draw games). 
 • Media: Many California newspapers and TV stations will showcase the winning Powerball numbers, as well as all other Lottery numbers as a convenience to their customers.
 • Check-a-Ticket Machines: Many California Lottery retailers use Check-a-Ticket machines where players can instantly discover if they own a winning ticket.

8. Can a winning Powerball prize purchased in California be claimed in another state?
 • No.  A Powerball winning ticket must be redeemed in the state in which it was purchased.

9. How will Powerball players collect prizes?
 • Powerball winning tickets will be able to be validated the day after the drawing.
 • Just as with all Lottery games, Powerball prizes of $599 or less may be collected at a Lottery retail location.
 • As with all California Lottery draw games, Powerball prizes of $600 or more will be able to be claimed at any California Lottery District Offices
 • A Winner Claim Form (available at the District Office or downloaded from this website) will need to be filled out and delivered to the District Office or mailed to Lottery Headquarters.  All Claim Forms will be processed at Lottery Headquarters in Sacramento and a check will be sent in the mail to all valid Powerball winners within six to eight weeks. 10. Where will the money go from the sale of Powerball tickets?
 • The sales from Powerball in California will help supplement public education budgets in the State of California just like the sales from all other California Lottery games.

11. Why did California join the Multi-State Powerball game?
 • The California Lottery is introducing Powerball after much study because our research shows the game will help maximize the amount of money the Lottery can earn for California’s public schools. In addition, there have been many requests from players and retailers that they’d like to see the game in the Lottery’s portfolio of games.

12. PowerPlay:  Some states offer PowerPlay and California will not. Why? 
 • California will NOT offer the PowerPlay feature because all California prizes are pari-mutuel by law and PowerPlay cannot be applied to pari-mutuel prizes.
