MAKING A DIFFERENCE
California Lottery Benefits California Schools
Recognized as one of the fastest growing lotteries in the United States, the California Lottery saw its sales rise by more than 27 percent in Fiscal Year 2011-2012. In all, the Lottery had one of its best years on record, seeing sales of $4.37 billion, an increase of nearly $900 million. The great news is that when Lottery sales are up, education is the biggest winner of all. Last year, the Lottery was able to send $192 million more to schools than in the previous fiscal year, which is fitting since the Lottery has always been committed to doing more to help the schools that educate our children. Since the first lottery ticket was sold more than 27 years ago, the Lottery has been helping to meet California’s needs and to improve the lives of countless Golden State residents – players and non-players alike. In that time, the Lottery has dedicated more than $25 billion in supplemental funding to California schools. In Fiscal Year 2011-2012 alone, the California Lottery returned $1.32 billion to schools in our state. K-12 education, Community Colleges, the California State University, the University of California, and other educational entities all benefit from Lottery proceeds. We concede that in the bigger picture our contributions to education is a drop in the bucket, but in this economy, every penny helps. Every day, the Lottery helps to make winners by providing entertaining and winning jackpots for lottery players, all while generating financial support for vital education programs and organizations in our State.
