SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Our commitment is to California.

To us, Corporate Social Responsibility is a pledge to lead in consumer protection, minimize our impact on the environment and support local communities.

While we provide fun and entertainment, we are unwavering in our support of responsible play. We fund counseling services for problem gamblers and never encourage players to spend more than their entertainment budgets allow on our products.

We are committed to maintaining and building trust between our organization and the many groups and individuals that we deal with and affect, including players, retailers, vendors, legislators and educators. And we’re committed to protecting the interests of all Californians.

The California Lottery has been certified at Level Three by the World Lottery Association’s (WLA) Responsible Gaming Framework. The California Lottery is the first lottery in the United States to be certified directly from Level One to Level Three and is one of two U.S. lottery organizations to achieve Level Three status.

In the WLA’s Independent Assessment Panel evaluation, the California Lottery’s Responsible Gaming program was specifically commended on:

- The provision [of] clear information on the organization itself, its regulatory context, its products, beneficiaries and responsible gaming governance structure;

- Its clear senior level commitment to Responsible Gaming as well as its commitment to wider corporate social responsibility issues; and,

- Its strong commitment to stakeholder engagement, transparency and openness.

The WLA’s core values are responsibility, integrity, professionalism and innovation that advances the interests of state-operated lotteries regarding best practices and ethical standards.

The California Lottery received this certification by submitting an extensive application and self-assessment detailing its Responsible Gaming program. The self-assessment revealed that during its 25-year history, the California Lottery has been a strong supporter, developer and promoter of Responsible Gaming programs. It has also pioneered problem gambling prevention efforts in California when it created California’s first gambling problem hotline. Further, the relationship between the California Lottery and the Office of Problem Gambling continues to be mutually beneficial. Public Service Announcements produced by the California Lottery in six different languages and aired by the Office of Problem Gambling are effective tools in publicizing information about Responsible Gaming, and where customers can receive treatment if needed.

The WLA represents more than 140 member lotteries from global professional association of state lottery and gaming organizations from 90 countries and five continents. Only five of its global members have achieved responsible gaming certification of Level Three. All members adhere to the strictest standards of social responsibility, responsible gaming, security and risk management.
