Cathy Sperry, the recipient of the “Hero in Education” award is a very special lady, who has overcome great personal challenges to help California’s students. Actor David Lander presented Ms. Sperry the "Hero In Education" award on Saturday, June 28, 2003.
Although Sperry suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, she has been volunteering at Castle View Elementary School in Riverside for nearly ten years. She travels several blocks to school in her wheelchair to work with Castle View’s students. Once there, Sperry tutors first, third and sixth grade students, helping them perfect their reading, writing and speaking skills. She also brings out the creative side of Castle View’s students by teaching them poetry, directing, writing and producing numerous school plays. Despite Sperry’s own personal challenges, her first priority is her commitment to enriching the lives of California’s students.
The California Lottery's distinguished "Heroes in Education" award has been presented monthly on "The Big Spin®" television show, since 1999.
