Keri Downs, Hero in Education

Actor Stephen Root Presented “Heroes in Education” Award to Hemet VolunteerOn June 11, 2005, Keri Downs, a volunteer from Hemet, was presented with the California Lottery's “Heroes in Education” award on “The Big Spin®” show.

Ms. Downs is a volunteer at both McSweeney Elementary and Diamond Valley Middle School in Hemet.  At both campuses, Ms. Downs leads the Parent Teacher Association, and serves as chairman of the school site council.  She oversees both schools’ budgets for books, support staff and fundraisers, which brought in over $40,000 this year.

Focused on helping the students achieve socially and academically, Ms. Downs also takes part in off-campus events like “skate night,” and at in-school ceremonies that recognize students for their achievements in citizenship, school pride, and respecting others.  She feels that these activities help boost the students’ self-esteem, which gives them the confidence to face challenges in the classroom and in life. In total, Ms. Downs puts nearly 40 hours per week volunteering to help out these students.

On hand to honor Keri Downs was actor Stephen Root who has been in countless films including Office Space, Surviving Christmas, Jersey Girl and Dodge Ball: A True Underdog Story.  He is best known as station owner Jimmy James from the television show, News Radio.

The California Lottery’s “Heroes in Education” award has been presented monthly on “The Big Spin®” show, since 1999.  The Lottery partners with celebrities to present these awards which recognize special individuals who volunteer time and resources to their schools and communities.
