Valentine’s Day Present Makes Rialto Man “Lucky for Life”
Wife Turns $1 Free Ticket into $500 a Week for 25 Years
SACRAMENTO – Like many other couples today, Rodney Reed’s wife Brenda was trying to figure out what to get her husband for Valentine’s Day. What she finally settled on turned out to be one of the best Valentine’s Day gifts ever, and Rodney couldn’t be happier about it. That’s because his wife gave Rodney a $1 Scratchers® ticket from the Lottery’s newest family of games, California Lucky for Life.
Brenda had won a free ticket on a Scratchers game she purchased last week, and decided to redeem it and give the ticket to her husband. So she went to Rosa’s Market & Liquor, which is located at 6108 Linden Avenue in Rialto (San Bernardino County), and picked up a $1 California Lucky for Life Scratchers ticket. “After she bought it, she walked outside and felt compelled to see if she won me anything or not,” Rodney said. Brenda scratched the ticket, saw it was a winner, and then had to ask the retailer “is this for real?” She then called Rodney and told him the news, saying “you gotta come home!” Rodney, who is retired but still works occasionally in security, then told his boss he had a family emergency and left for the day.
The couple has not decided whether they’ll take the lump sum amount, which is $375,000 before taxes, or opt for the $500 weekly payments for 25 years, which amounts to $650,000. While they haven't decided how to take their cash, they do know what they’d like to do with their winnings. Rodney told us they’d like to pay some bills, pay off their cars, and take their four kids and seven grandkids on a family vacation. But for now, they’re planning a big family dinner tonight for Valentine’s Day to celebrate their good fortune.
The California Lucky for Life Scratchers family is part of the Lottery’s continued effort to give out more prizes, create more winners and earn more money for education. Games are available at the $1, $2, $5, and $10 price points. Each price point offers a similar play style. If you match any of your numbers to any of the winning numbers you uncover when you scratch the ticket, then you win that prize. If you uncover a money bag symbol, you automatically win the prize associated with it. And, if you uncover a LIFE symbol, you win the top prize for that game – a prize paid out weekly over the course of 25 years, or available as a lump sum amount. As you move up in price from $1 to $10, you have more chances to win and the potential prizes just keep getting higher.
Starting with the $1 game, players can win prizes ranging from a free ticket all the way up to $500 a week for 25 years. Four lucky players will win the top prize, which is also available as a $375,000 lump sum payment. The $2 ticket offers players the chance to win prizes ranging from a free ticket all the way up to $1,000 a week for 25 years. Four lucky players will win the top prize, which is also available as a $750,000 lump sum payment. The $5 ticket offers players the chance to win prizes ranging from a free ticket all the way up to $2,500 a week for 25 years. A whopping 10 lucky players will win the top prize, which is also available as a $1.9 million lump sum payment. And finally, the $10 ticket offers players the chance to win prizes ranging from a free ticket all the way up to the grandest prize of all – $5,000 a week for 25 years. Ten lucky players will win the top prize, which is also available as a lump sum payment of $3,750,000 – the largest instant prize the Lottery has ever offered.
