Newest Millionaire in S.F. Never Saw the Signs
Man Sat on POWERBALL® Ticket Worth $2.6 Million!
SACRAMENTO – There were many calls for California’s biggest POWERBALL winner yet to come forward and claim their fortune. Douglas Sumiyoshi just never saw the signs. Literally!
On his way to work, the 43-year-old San Francisco hotel security worker decided to stop by the local grocer where he bought his ticket to see whether he could throw it away. Good thing he checked. He says he couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw that he had matched five numbers. Then he started shaking when he saw the dollar amount attached to the win: $2,623,314!
“I wasn’t sure it was right, so I went to the clerk and showed her,” said Sumiyoshi. “She said, ‘Yes, yes! You won! Come with me, look!’ She took me outside the store and pointed up at a sign that said the winning ticket had been purchased there. That’s when I knew it was real!”
He had walked right past that sign, completely unaware the words on it were screaming to him that he was a millionaire!! Not only that, get this: Sumiyoshi had been sitting on his ticket for almost two weeks! “I had friends visiting, so I didn’t get around to checking the numbers. The ticket just sat on a shelf.” Almost $3 million worth of paper just lying around the house. Unbelievable!
Sumiyoshi bought his winning ticket at Cable Car Wine & Spirit Grocer, which is located at 841 Clement Street in San Francisco. He successfully matched the numbers 8, 37, 2, 35 and 22, missing only the Powerball number of 6.
