SACRAMENTO – California Lottery officials honored Luen Shing Bookstore in Monterey Park as their statewide “Retailer of the Month” for January 2008. Lottery Officials, local dignitaries David Lau and Anthony Wong of the Monterey Park City Council, and members of the community attended the celebration to honor Luen Shing Bookstore.
Luen Shing Bookstore has been a Lottery retailer since January 2002 and in the past year this location’s Lottery sales have averaged more than $14,000 a week. Since 2002, Luen Shing Bookstore generated nearly $1.9 million in Lottery sales, amounting to a total of $645,595 in contributions to public education.
“The California Lottery is proud to honor Luen Shing Bookstore for its commitment to customer service, involvement in the community and for making a difference in public education.” said Lottery Director, Joan Borucki.
Each month since 1986, the California State Lottery presents a statewide "Retailer of the Month" award to one of the more nearly 19,000 Lottery retailers in the state. Lottery enthusiasm, creative merchandising, pride of ownership and, most of all, a connection to their communities are the defining criteria of each “Retailer of the Month”. At the end of the year, one of the "Retailers of the Month" is honored as the statewide California Lottery "Retailer of the Year". This honor includes a plaque, a $5,000 check and a specialized gold leaf California Lottery "Retailer of the Year" terminal to display in their store.

The California State Lottery contributes at least 34 cents of every dollar that players spend on Lottery products to public education and returns more than 50 percent of sales to players in the form of prizes. Since its inception in 1985, the Lottery has contributed more than $19 billion to California schools out of total sales of more than $52 billion. Retailers win too, earning $3.3 billion in compensation since 1985.
