A Man That Wears Many Hats Named as a Hero in Education

Doran BarnesSACRAMENTO – “To wear many hats” is a phrase that comes from a time (not long ago) when everyone wore hats, and many of those hats were specific to a given trade, official position or function.  Someone who had several roles would have several hats and would wear the appropriate one for the occasion.  Although Doran Barnes doesn’t really wear hats, he is the CEO of a worldwide environmental organization, a teacher, and also volunteers with many organizations.  Now he’s being honored as a California State Lottery Hero in Education on “The Big Spin®” show airing statewide December 2, 2006.  Doran Barnes will be presented with the recognition by Liz Torres, a singer, dancer, comedienne and Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actress who is currently playing Miss Patty the dance teacher on the long-running hit show Gilmore Girls.

South Hills High School is lucky to have Doran Barnes as a supporter and Booster Club volunteer of their band and colorguard.  When they needed new instruments and money to pay for private lessons for some students in need, Mr. Barnes didn’t hesitate to step up and help raise the money.  His students say that he is the first to show up for an event and the last to leave.  They’re amazed at the time and support that he gives to the band.  His dedication and commitment is not only to the high school but it’s also to his family. “I always make sure I am home for dinner, even if it’s just for a quick bite, we always sit down to eat dinner together” said Mr. Barnes.   Even though he has been chosen as a Hero in Education, he says “he works with heroes everyday”, the students and teachers.

Mr. Barnes is the CEO of Foothill Transit, the Vice President of Veolia (a worldwide environ- mental service organization), a volunteer for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, a public speaking teacher at Dale Carnegie and last but not least, he volunteers at the Intractable Pain Clinic in West Covina.  He is described as “always having a smile on his face that brightens up the room”.  He has made such a positive difference in the lives of these high school band students; he is a true role model.

The California State Lottery's "Heroes in Education" award has been presented monthly on The Big Spin show since 1999. The Lottery partners with celebrities to present these awards, which recognize special individuals who volunteer time and resources to their schools and communities.
