SACRAMENTO – The California State Lottery has just announced that the SuperLOTTO Plus® jackpot tonight has increased to a whopping $110 million, giving Californians who haven’t bought tickets yet even more reason to play to win the world’s largest lottery prize.
Just how much is $110 million? A worker earning a salary of $45,000 a year would have to work more than 2,444 years to earn $110 million, the equivalent of what a player could win with just a single $1 LOTTO ticket purchase. If you were to count pennies one at a time (1 a second), it would take you approximately 3.4 years of nonstop counting, 24 hours a day, to reach 110 million. The amount is staggering and anyone who plays could be a winner.
The jackpot has rolled 23 times, an all-time California high, building Lottery players’ excitement over the 6th highest prize in California State Lottery history. If just one person wins, he or she would be the second-largest individual Lottery prizewinner in California history. The largest single prizewinner is Alcario Castellano, of San Jose, California who won $141 million on June 23, 2001.
Education and retailers will benefit from the huge jackpot too. Schools receive 34 cents of every ticket sold and with a jackpot of this size that means $64 million will go to education. Also, the retailer who sells a single winning $110 million ticket will receive a $550,000 bonus. This past year, the California Lottery contributed over $1.2 billion to public education and has provided more than $1 billion annually to California schools for the last six years.
SuperLOTTO Plus can be played at approximately 18,500 retail businesses around California. The SuperLOTTO Plus draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
