Carlsbad Volunteer Receives "Heroes in Education" Award for Children’s Theater Arts Program

Kathrine GardnerSACRAMENTO - On April 15, 2006, Katherine Gardner, a volunteer from Carlsbad, will be presented with the California State Lottery's "Heroes in Education" award on "The Big Spin®" show.

Four years ago, aware that her children’s school could not afford an arts program, Katherine Gardner took it upon herself to build an after-school theater program. Centered at the Calavera Hills School in Carlsbad, Katherine’s program, Coyote Cavern Productions gives children the opportunity to experience the world of professional theater production.

Incorporating students from second through eighth grade, Ms.Gardner’s program teaches the students how to handle props, create sets, and manage stage equipment, as well as acting, singing and dancing. To get parts in the productions, the kids must go through Broadway-style auditions then attend rehearsals, wardrobe parades, and run-throughs. Participation has more than doubled since the program started in 2002 with more than 175 students enrolled today. Having more people has meant higher quality productions and larger audiences, providing the children with a meaningful experience they will never forget. Funded entirely through ticket sales, grants and donations, Katherine’s Coyote Cavern Productions, remains free to the students of Calaveras Hills School. Through this unique program, Katherine has channeled her imagination and drive to allow students to experience the joy of theater, making her a true Hero in Education.

On hand to honor Katherine Gardner was veteran actor Gerald McRaney. McRaney is best know for his starring roles in the television series Major Dad and Simon and Simon and recent appearances on The West Wing, JAG and HBO’s Deadwood.

The California State Lottery’s "Heroes in Education" award has been presented monthly on "The Big Spin®" show, since 1999. The Lottery partners with celebrities to present these awards, which recognize special individuals who volunteer time and resources to their schools and communities.
