Lightning Strikes Again for Santa Clarita’s Valencia Liquor

SACRAMENTO, January 20, 2005 – The California Lottery’s rankings of “Lucky Retailers” grew by one last night. The $10 million SuperLOTTO Plus jackpot was won by one winning ticket drawn last night, Wednesday, January 19, 2005 with the winning numbers 2, 9, 27, 30, 45 and MEGA 13. The winning ticket was sold at Valencia Liquor, 22925 Lyons Avenue in Santa Clarita, creating yet another “Lucky Retailer”. The winner has not yet appeared to claim their prize.

This is the second winning ticket Valencia Liquor has sold making them a “Lucky Retailer” and only the 66th retailer out of the Lottery’s 18,000 retail network that has sold two or more winning jackpot tickets. Valencia Liquor has been a Lottery retailer since March of 1993 and their combined sales of both Scratchers and online tickets through February 2004 is $7,445,212 (current figures were not available) and are among the top 100 in the state for online sales. With a minimum of 34 percent of all Lottery ticket sales benefiting public education, Valencia Liquor has contributed more than $2.5 million to California’s public schools.

Valencia Liquor, located near the high desert, sold its first winning jackpot ticket in April of 1998 to Leonardo Hernandez. Valencia Liquor sold one of three winning tickets for the $104 million jackpot, making Mr. Hernandez’ ticket worth $34,666,000. Last night’s winning ticket is worth $10 million. The winner chose the annual payments and will receive $250,000 in the first year and $510,000 for the final payment in the 26th year (before taxes are taken out). There are no state or local taxes on lottery winnings.

Valencia Liquor will receive $50,000 as a bonus for selling the winning jackpot ticket. This represents one half of one percent of the jackpot. Since 1985 the California Lottery has contributed more than $16 billion to public education.
