MEDIA ADVISORY - WHAT ARE YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS?
Are They The Same As The California Lottery’s Winners Of 2004?

SACRAMENTO, December 31, 2004 – What would you do if you won the California Lottery’s current SuperLOTTO Plus jackpot of $48 million? Would it change your New Year’s resolutions?

We contacted winners from 2004 and asked what their New Year’s resolutions were on this, the first New Year’s since becoming millionaires. Did winning the California Lottery change their New Year’s resolutions? Are they the same as yours?

Of the winners we contacted, nearly half said they vow to take a vacation and that same number said they plan to continue playing the Lottery, in hopes of winning again. No one mentioned losing weight or plans to quit smoking and as you can imagine, the resolutions of millionaires are probably a little different than those of most of the population, for example, one winner plans to buy a vacation home in Mexico and others said that they are so happy and content in their lives that they don’t plan on making any changes or resolutions.

“A few of the other more popular resolutions included relaxing, buying a business and helping others including their families. When you win the Lottery, lives are changed and if someone wins this $48 million jackpot, their lives will change too. The winners we interviewed had their lives changed by winning the Lottery, but not so much that they don’t think of others first. The most compelling quote I heard while talking to the winners was one winner who said she resolves to ‘help others out of their hardships’ and that since she has won, she has been able to help others and that makes her feel good. That’s what our winners are all about,” said California Lottery Interim Director Chon Gutierrez.
