Actor John McCook Presented “Heroes in Education” Award to San Pedro Volunteer

SACRAMENTO – On October 23, 2004, John McCook presented Kristine Ramos, a 20-year volunteer from San Pedro, with the California Lottery's “Heroes in Education” award on “The Big Spin®” show.

For over 20 years, Ms. Ramos has given her free time to head the Barton Hill Elementary School’s drill team.  Under her leadership, the team has won numerous awards at contests throughout the state, resulting in improved morale for the kids.  Occasionally, when school funds have been unavailable, Ms. Ramos has pitched in, using her own money to provide students with costumes and trophies.

Three years ago, Ms. Ramos suffered a stroke that could have ended her work with these students.  While many people would have slowed down after such trauma, Ms. Ramos jumped right back into her role as leader for Barton Hill’s students.  In addition to her work with the drill team, she also volunteers every single day in the classroom, making sure that these students have plenty of help achieving their best in school.

On hand to honor Ms. Ramos was John McCook who has appeared on Broadway, and in such television shows like L.A. Law, Murder She Wrote, Newhart and Codename: Foxfire.  He is best known for playing the romantic, debonair fashion designer, Eric Forrester, on the popular CBS daytime drama The Bold and the Beautiful.

The California Lottery’s “Heroes in Education” award has been presented monthly on “The Big Spin®” show, since 1999.  The Lottery partners with celebrities to present these awards which recognize special individuals who volunteer time and resources to their schools and communities.
