Keiko Agena Presented "Heroes in Education" Award to San Clemente Volunteer

hero-smallSACRAMENTO – On August 28, 2004, Keiko Agena presented Norma Molina, a seventeen year-old high school student from San Clemente, with the California Lottery's “Heroes in Education” award on “The Big Spin®” show.

Ms. Molina is a Junior at San Clemente High School and through the school’s Freshman Mentor Program, she works with newly arrived ninth graders to help make their transition from middle school to high school easier.  Four days a week, Ms. Molina gives up a portion of her lunch break to help new students in whatever way she can.  She tutors them, helps them get organized, makes sure they complete their homework, and provides them with useful information that will help their high school experience be positive one.

An excellent role model, Ms. Molina has a unique ability to make these students feel good about themselves.  Since the program’s inception, she has helped over 40 students go through the junior high to high school transition.  Ms. Molina’s only reward is the excitement that she feels as she watches these shy freshmen overcome intimidation to become confident and successful students.

On hand to honor Ms. Molina was Keiko Agena who has guest starred on such television shows as Felicity, Sister, Sister, E.R. and Beverly Hills, 90210.  She is best known for playing Rory’s best friend, Lane Kim, on the popular television series Gilmore Girls.

The California Lottery’s “Heroes in Education” award has been presented monthly on “The Big Spin®” show, since 1999.  The Lottery partners with celebrities to present these awards which recognize special individuals who volunteer time and resources to their schools and communities.
