Corbin Bernsen Presented "Heroes in Education" Award to San Diego Volunteer

corbinSACRAMENTO – On July 3, 2004, Corbin Bernsen presented Jeanne Stutzer, a retired music teacher, with the California Lottery's “Heroes in Education” award on “The Big Spin®” show.

Ms. Stutzer has always been aware of the positive effects that “the arts” can have on students’ academic achievement.  When budget cuts became a necessity at Alcott Elementary School in San Diego, she stepped in to save the music program.  Ms. Stutzer began offering free music lessons to students, going from classroom to classroom, sharing her love of music with students.  She also spends countless hours rehearsing with her students.  At the end of each year, the students celebrate their accomplishments by hosting a concert for family and friends.

By exposing the students’ hidden musical talents, Ms. Stutzer has made Alcott’s students more confident and increased their interest in learning.  The students are truly enriched by her outstanding efforts.

On hand to honor Ms. Stutzer was Corbin Bernsen who has starred in such films as Major League, Radio Land Murders, Tales From The Hood and The Great White Hype.  He is best known for playing divorce attorney, Arnie Becker, on the popular television series L.A. Law.

The California Lottery’s “Heroes in Education” award has been presented monthly on “The Big Spin®” show, since 1999.  The Lottery partners with celebrities to present these awards which recognize special individuals who volunteer time and resources to their schools and communities.
