California Lottery Announces Third Quarter Education Transfer

Sacramento – The California Lottery announces fiscal year 2003-04 third quarter transfer of $ 281,424,449 to the Lottery Education Fund.  The amount transferred is unaudited and represents fiscal year 2003-04 third quarter figures.  This amount will be disbursed by the State Controller’s Office to the California’s public schools.

The Lottery Act requires Lottery funds to be used as supplemental funding and authorizes local discretion on the best use of the funds.  “We will use this money for a P.E. teacher for 5 months, a music teacher for 2.5 months, an art teacher for 2.5 months and we will also buy supplementary math material” said John DeLandtsheer, Principal, Redlands Unified School District.  Lottery funds also supports other areas of public education including: community colleges, University of California, California State University, adult education, charter schools and the California Youth Authority.

The breakdown of year to date transfers is as follows:

Operating income $809,422,089
Interest earned 5,405,985
Other Income 74,749
Unclaimed prizes 40,860,729
TOTAL $855,763,552

These funds bring the Lottery closer to generating over $1 billion for California's classroom for the fourth consecutive year.
