Emmy Award-Winning Actress Mariette Hartley Presents  “Heroes in Education” Award to Senior Volunteer

SACRAMENTO – Mariette Hartley presented Doug Pearse with the California Lottery's “Hero in Education” award on “The Big Spin®” show.

Mariette Hartley presented Doug Pearse with the California Lottery's “Hero in Education” award on “The Big Spin®” show. This month’s volunteer hero is an 85 years young resident of Mariposa.  For 14 years, “Grandpa Doug” as the kids affectionately call him, has been volunteering five days a week at three different schools in Mariposa.  Pearse begins each day at Woodland Elementary School, where for several hours, he tutors students in reading and encourages them by listening to them as they read.

Pearse’s next stop is at Mariposa Middle School, where he helps students with their school work in the classroom and continues by tutoring students during an after-school program. Pearse also attends every middle school sporting event and provides water and snacks for the teams.  Finally, Pearse heads over to Mariposa High School, where he helps out at book fairs, chaperones high school dances and volunteers at every school presentation.

Hartley has starred in Broadway productions like O’Hara’s Wife and Encino Man, and in dozens of television shows including Mash, The Incredible Hulk and One Life to Live.  She also hosted The CBS Morning Program, Wild About Animals, and currently hosts Healthy Solutions.

The California Lottery’s “Heroes in Education” award has been presented monthly on “The Big Spin®” television show, since 1999.  The Lottery partners with celebrities to present these awards which recognize special individuals who volunteer time and resources to their schools and communities.  This week’s show airs Saturday, March 13, 2004, in every California television market in California.
