The California Lottery Announces March 8-14, 2004 as National Problem Gambling Awareness Week

The California Lottery kicks off a statewide campaign March 8, 2004 that raises awareness to problem gambling and the resources available for individuals whose gambling is negatively affecting their lives.  This effort is being done in collaboration with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the California Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG).  “The California Lottery encourages responsible play -- one problem gambler is one too many,” explained Tony Molica, CEO of the California Lottery.

Approximately 1%-3% of the nation's adult population, experiences a progressive behavior disorder known as Problem or Compulsive Gambling.  This behavior often leads to an uncontrollable preoccupation or urge to gamble.  Since 1980, the American Psychiatric Association has classified compulsive gambling as a diagnosable and treatable illness.

The statewide campaign will include a public service announcement that will air statewide and an informative bilingual (Spanish/English) website that provides helpful information regarding problem gambling, as well as links to NCPG, CCPG, and radio ads.  Additionally, participating Lottery retailers will have brochures highlighting problem gambling warning signs and who to call for help.

The California Lottery is pleased to support this very important effort and encourage those requiring assistance to contact the helpline at 1-888-277-3115 or logon to www.calottery.com.
