SACRAMENTO -- On this week's "The Big Spin®" Show, television legend, Ed McMahon presented Bob Watson with the California Lottery's "Hero in Education" award. McMahon appeared on television shows such as Bloopers and Practical Jokes and his own long running show Star Search. He is best known for his role as Johnny Carson's sidekick for 30 years on NBC's The Tonight Show.
This month's hero is San Marco's resident Bob Watson, who is not only a hero in education, but also a hero to his country. Nearly 60 years ago, Mr. Watson served in the United States Navy and fought during World War II in the famous invasion of Normandy.
Currently, he shares his experiences with California's kids on a weekly basis by speaking to high school students across the state and gives a first hand account of the war. Mr. Watson brings pictures of the Normandy coastline, points out where he landed, and he even shows students the helmet that he wore into battle.
Using these visual aids, Mr. Watson is able to really bring the sights, sounds, and smells of war by making history come alive for California's kids. He also reminds students that freedom they enjoy today has been paid for with great sacrifices.
The California Lottery's distinguished "Heroes in Education" award has been presented monthly on "The Big Spin®" television show, since 1999. The Lottery partners with various celebrities to present these awards which recognize special individuals who devote their time and resources to their schools and communities. This week's show airs Saturday, November 15, 2003, in 12 television markets statewide.
