Assemblymember Jenny Oropeza Presents "Exceptional Educator" Award to Wilmington Teacher

SACRAMENTO -- On this week's "The Big Spin®" show, Assemblymember Jenny Oropeza presented Leticia Mercado with the California Lottery's "Exceptional Educator" award. Assemblymember Oropeza explained, "Leticia is a dynamic teacher at Banning High School in Wilmington whose commitment to students has truly helped them succeed."

Having come from a successful career in business, Ms. Mercado enters her Algebra, Computer, Law and Business classes equipped with real-world experience to incorporate into meaningful lesson plans for her students. This is particularly advantageous for the at-risk students in her Global Internet Trade class. Like most of her students, Ms. Mercado comes from a first-generation Latino-American family and knows first-hand the daily struggles her students face. Her background helps her connect with her students and act as a role model, demonstrating the importance of education in attaining success. She also brings in guest speakers and coordinates field trips as part of her rigorous curriculum to ensure that the lessons are truly experienced by students.

The California Lottery's distinguished "Exceptional Educator" award has been presented on "The Big Spin®" television show since April of 2001. The Lottery enlists various Legislators to present these awards which recognize the outstanding teachers whose extraordinary efforts help California students to succeed. This week's show aired Saturday, September 27, 2003, in 12 television markets statewide.
