$90 Million Superlotto Plus Jackpot Ranks Sixth In California Lottery History

SACRAMENTO, August 8, 2003 -- Lottery officials announced the SuperLotto Plus jackpot at $90 million. "Sales have been steadily rising to make this the sixth largest jackpot in the California Lottery's 18 year history," said Lottery Commission Chairman David Rosenberg. "Sales are phenomenal and California's schools will receive more than $50 million from this jackpot which has rolled ten times."

Hourly sales for Saturday night's jackpot are projected to reach more than $3.3 million. Total draw sales since last Wednesday are expected to be close to $40 million. Saturday's sales are projected to reach approximately $23 million for the day. A single jackpot winner of $90 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment equaling approximately $2.25 million and the 26th payment being approximately $4.5 million before federal tax withholding of 25%, there are no state taxes. The estimated cash value of $45 million would equal roughly half of the jackpot, or the amount the lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner.

On February 16, 2002, the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $193 million and was won by 3 winning tickets purchased in Montebello, Orange and Half Moon Bay. Alcario Castellano of San Jose, California made Lottery history when he became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $141 million on June 23, 2001.

SuperLotto Plus can be played at more than 18,000 retail business establishments around the state. The SuperLotto Plus draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
