Assemblymember Jerome Horton Presents "Exceptional Educator" Award to Inglewood Teacher

SACRAMENTO -- On this week's show Assemblymember Jerome Horton presented Essiebea Tsehai Farrell with the California Lottery's "Exceptional Educator" award. Assemblymember Horton explained, "Tsehai is an English teacher at Inglewood High School who uses her love of language to connect with inner-city students."

Essiebea Tsehai Farrell grew up in the Watts area of Los Angeles and she experienced first hand the daily challenges her students face and how education can unlock a world full of great opportunities. Her "Teach & Reach" methods of instruction inspire students to expand their knowledge, through color and written expression. She relates to students in a way which draws them in, ensuring the lesson is learned and not forgotten. Ultimately, her students are given hope for their future and they are empowered to expect more from themselves. Thus, her students pursue their dreams and achieve great goals. Because of her students' success, Farrell has become a role model in her district and was named Kaiser Permanente's Teacher of the Year.

The California Lottery's distinguished "Exceptional Educator" award has been presented on "The Big Spin®" television show since April of 2001. The Lottery enlists various legislators to present these awards which recognize the outstanding teachers whose extraordinary efforts added significantly to the success of California students. This week's show aired Saturday, August 2, 2003, in twelve television markets statewide.
