SACRAMENTO -- On this week’s show, actor Branscombe Richmond presented Dominic Cummings with the California Lottery's "Hero in Education" award. Richmond has starred in action films such as Commando, Hard to Kill, and The Scorpion King. He has also appeared on numerous television shows including Magnum P.I., Baywatch and Walker, Texas Ranger. He is best known as bounty hunter "Bobby Six-Killer" from the television series Renegade.
Dominic Cummings, the recipient of the "Hero in Education" award is a very special seven-year-old volunteer from Modesto. Cummings is an average second grader at University Charter School; but, it’s what he does after school that makes him a hero. Two years ago, Cummings decided that he wanted to help out kids that were less fortunate than him. He began by visiting needy kids in shelters and hospitals around California, reading to them, and leaving behind a book for them to keep. Consistent with his warm heart, Cummings decided that these kids could use some help staying warm during the winter, so he began leaving behind a pair of socks as well. Cummings has continued his tradition by visiting kids almost every day after school and on weekends, transforming the act of kindness into an organization he calls "Cozy Toes." In the beginning, Cummings’ mother supplied the books and the socks, but through his own fundraising efforts, Cummings has received donations from places as far away as New York City.
The California Lottery’s distinguished "Heroes in Education" award has been presented monthly on "The Big Spin®" television show, since 1999. The Lottery enlists various celebrities to present these awards which recognize the "unsung heroes" who devote their time and/or resources to assist their neighborhood schools. This week’s show airs Saturday, July 26, 2003, in 12 television markets statewide.
