Senator Mike Machado presented Robert Mitchell with the California Lottery's Exceptional Educator Award on "The Big Spin®" show. Senator Machado explained, "Robert is a Social Science teacher who is truly making a difference in the lives of students at Armijo High School."

Robert Mitchell is responsible for modernizing the Science Department at Armijo High School. The textbooks and science equipment used to teach students were antiquated, in some cases over 50 years old. So it became Mitchell’s mission to update the Science Department. Through his persistence, the school was awarded an $84,000 grant for instructional material. The students now have the learning tools and technology they need to be prepared for the 21st Century. Mitchell also helped save the school district’s Science Fair by quadrupling the number of corporate sponsors. Machado concluded, "Robert, for these reasons, I’m proud to proclaim you an Exceptional Educator."

The California Lottery’s distinguished "Exceptional Educator" award program enlists various legislators to present these awards which recognize the outstanding teachers whose extraordinary efforts in their schools have added significantly to the success of California students.
