San Francisco Business Receives Lottery's Top Honor
"Liquor Locker" Named Lottery's Retailer of the Year

SACRAMENTO — The California Lottery announced today that San Francisco's Liquor Locker, owned by Darryl Fown, has been named California Lottery's Retailer of the Year. A special presentation will be held at Liquor Locker, 1223 Taraval Street, San Francisco at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, November 20, 2002.

"Dedication to their customers, involvement with the community, and focusing on promoting the Lottery with a positive attitude makes for a successful sales formula," said Lottery CEO, Joan Wilson.

Owner Darryl Fown, along with his parents, have been selling Lottery products for nearly 15 years. They have average weekly sales of $16,000 and since they started selling in 1988, total sales to date are over $7.1 million. With a minimum 34 percent of all Lottery ticket sales benefiting public education, Liquor Locker has contributed more than $2.4 million to California's public schools.

The Fowns are also heavily involved in their community. Darryl volunteers at the Golden Gate Station as a member of the coast guard and contributes money and food for the annual St. Anthony's Luncheon during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. He also teaches Tai Chi at a local senior center, helps Lincoln High School students in their sports activities and, lastly, aids local schools by donating money for events such as car washes and bake sales.

The California Lottery sells its products through a network of more than 18,000 outlets statewide. The Lottery provides 52.5 percent of its revenues to players as prizes, 34 percent to public schools and 13.5 percent for administrative expenses, which includes 6.9 percent for retailer commissions. Since 1985 the Lottery has raised more than $14 billion for public schools.
